Tour Information (taken from the tour leaflet)
To aviation enthusiasts around the world, the
annual Confederate Air Force (CAF) Airshow – now ‘politically corrected’
in America to “Commemorative” Air Force, is legendary.
With scores of beautifully restored warbirds
on static display and in the air – it’s THE warbird air show. From the
early days in Harlingen, down on the US-Mexican border, to the present
“Rebel Field” at Midland, the show has changed very little, except that
modern-day military aircraft now also feature in the static park and in
the air show.
This year they are looking to put on a special
show – including a Saturday evening display – as they commemorate the 60th
Anniversary of the end of World War II. The 2-day show features an
all-action flying programme from mid-morning, during which dozens of
warbirds re-enact some of the famous air battles of World War II, e.g. the
Raid on Ploesti, Pearl Harbor, The Mariana’s Turkey Shoot, and the B-29
mission to Hiroshima.
With huge amounts of perfectly timed
pyrotechnics the blue Texas sky is soon filled with flashes, flames,
smoke, bangs and explosions, and diving, turning and wheeling aircraft as
the Zeros, Vals and Kates of the Tora! Tora! Tora! Squadron fight it out
with the P-40s, P-51s, P-38s, Wildcats, Hellcats, Corsairs, Dauntless’,
Avengers, SBDs, B-17s, B-24, B-25s, A-20s, A-26s et al! The sky is full of
‘flak’ and warbirds!
FAA regulations now permit some CAF aircraft
to offer pleasure flights. Aircraft types available and prices are not
usually known until the actual day, however, in the past we have arranged
flights on a variety of ‘big birds’ including: B-24 Liberator ($350.00),
B-17 Flying Fortress ($350.00), PBY Catalina ($250.00), and various B-25
Mitchells ($175.00). Prices are per person for a 30-40-minutes flight.
We stay 3 nights at the Airport Plaza Inn
(formerly the Ramada Inn-Midland Airport) on a room only basis. Ideally
located only 1 mile from the show, the hotel facilities include the
“Colonel’s Room” self-service cafeteria-type restaurant serving a limited
menu, the popular “Aviator’s Bar”, in-room coffee makers and an outdoor
swimming pool. A mile away is a very popular diner serving excellent meals
and reachable on foot, taxi or by the motel’s mini-van. For our transfers
on arrival and departure we use a chartered coach, and from motel to/from
the air show, their mini-van runs to/from the CAF Museum every 30 minutes.
Tickets to the air show on both days are included in the tour price.
THIS IS AN IDEAL OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO THE WORLD’S LARGEST AND MOST FAMOUS
WARBIRD AIR SHOW! Our 5-day mini-tour gives you the opportunity to fulfil
one of your aviation dreams and experience the incredible and
unforgettable Confederate Air Force at Air Sho’ 2005. And this is a
popular tour - over the last 5 years more than 300 warbird enthusiasts
have joined us for a great weekend ‘deep in the heart of Texas’!
